The superb golf destination of Mazagan is close to Casablanca on the west coast of Morocco, opposite the Canary Islands. A fantastic golfers paradise with a hotel built by Kerzner, who also own the One & Only Royal Mirage in Dubai and originally built Le Touessrok, this is a great golf course designed by Gary Player – a true links right on the Atlantic.
One of our sales team DJ has just returned from a long weekend to explore this new venue and this was his feedback.
From the UK, the resort can be accessed by direct flights to Casablanca from Heathrow and London Gatwick with Royal Air Maroc. We flew with Royal Air Maroc who include golf club carriage free of charge!
BMI have also just a launched a service from London Heathrow which will provide a greater choice of flights. For those who stay in the northern half of the UK, we recommend flying with Air France as there is a multitude of flights from France to Casablanca each day.
The best travel period to experience this wonderful resort is from mid February to November. Temperatures rarely exceed 30 degrees and with a cool sea breeze coming in from the Atlantic Ocean. The months of December & January can be rather unpredictable with greater rainfall.
The transfer time from Casablanca Airport is one hour on a motorway built especially for the Mazagan Beach Resort!
From the moment you enter the resort there is a real WOW factor and it is easy to see why the King of Saudi Arabia has spent his own vacation here. Stunning architecture both in the interior and exterior of the main hotel building. There is a very pleasant ambience throughout the resort and it is perfect for families, couples and golfing groups. Despite regularly being close to full occupancy, service levels are very high and the staff are very efficient.
I stayed in a Deluxe King Room which was very spacious and elegantly decorated. Room amenities included king-size bed, telephone, flat screen TV, and bathroom complete with both bath and separate shower. We also had a tour of the other room types which included several categories of suites which are all very different but all very luxurious. Perfect for that special occasion.
There is a fine selection of dining options with the Market Place the main buffet restaurant for evening meals. A la carte options include the sea food restaurant Sel de Mer and the Morjana, a restaurant serving the finest local cuisine. Delicious dishes are also served in the Clubhouse. In my opinion, Half Board is the best meal plan to take during your stay.
Facilities within the resort are excellent and include a delightful Spa, outdoor heated swimming pool, kids club and a large casino & nightclub.
The on-site Mazagan Golf Club managed by Troon Golf and designed by Gary Player is the highlight for all golfers! A beautiful links layout that meanders throughout the resort before climaxing with several holes along the coastline. The short par 4 6th and picturesque par 3 15th are the two signature holes. The course was in pristine condition with very quick and smooth greens. From the 19th June -30th September, unlimited golf is included in the room rate which offers tremendous value! Practice facilities are excellent and include driving range, putting green and pitching area.
There is a second course (not owned by Mazagan) located 5 minutes from the resort. The Royal Golf Club can be accessed by courtesy shuttle and is a tree-lined design very different to Mazagan. However the course was not in the best condition and I would recommend guests play all their golf at Mazagan.

| Heat wave in Belek in September |

Incredibly high temperatures in Belek during mid September with up to 45 degrees for several days surprised many golfers and made it really tough to play in the searing heat. This was a freak month and although only 1 week was as hot as this the sun took its toll on 3 of the region's courses which boast creeping bent grasses, the result being that some of the courses greens at Nobilis, Montgomerie and Carya suffered terribly and alot of the greens burnt and damaged. This was because they had started the overseeding work a little earlier than previous years and were caught out due to exceptionally rare conditions. The creeping bent is much more sensitive than Bermuda which is the type of grass the other courses grow on the putting surfaces. When they are good they are the best and when they are bad they are the worst! Having interviewed head greenkeepers in mid October it will probably be 2-4 weeks before the bad greens recover and may effect the enjoyment of some visiting golfers during the next 3 week up to mid November.

I recently inspected the Voyage Belek Resort adjacent to the Montgomerie Course, a magnificent new resort which boasts 3 buildings and a huge estate with lovely gardens, leading down to a great beach. As a Member of Turnberry and Director of Elegant Golf Resorts based in Prestwick Ayrshire, I would like to draw attention to the fact that there are only just over 2 weeks left to stay and play Turnberry at the fantastic winter rates.
