Golf in Arizona
Arizona is a wonderful destination for any type of vacation, a wonderfully dry and hot climate with no humidity means that you can enjoy temperatures in the 90s but without the inconvenience of sweating particularly worth mentioning if you are golfing , sightseeing or sunbathing.
One can expect temperatures in the 90s even in the months of March, April and October. The high season for golf course price is from January to March with shoulder season November to the end of December, and April and May. The low season is from June to September when prices are at their lowest.
November is a favourite month when the weather is excellent but the prices very reasonable - but May, June and September are great also when prices are much cheaper and the weather guaranteed and because of the lack of humidity golf is very playable indeed.
The area of Phoenix and Scottsdale is where we focus on for our golf holiday venues as this is where the heart of the great golfing venues is located, the best areas being the township of Carefree with Troon North and the Boulders Resorts being the main highlights, this is where the scenery is at its most dramatic close to Pinnacle Peak - fabulous desert and mountain scenery with marvellous wildlife and natural desert vegetation. Resort hotels here include Four Seasons just 3 minutes from Troon North, the Carefree Resort for the more cost conscious which is a cracking 3 star with a great ambience and the iconic Boulders Resort which is the most stunning 36 hole boutique golf resort. The ultimate golfing escape is guaranteed here. There are other less expensive golf courses available here also with courses like Legend Trail, Dove Valley Ranch and the Rancho Manana courses all close by and the superb 36 hole combination at Grayhawk also on a par in quality with Troon's Monument and Pinnacle tests.
No golf holiday here would be complete without a game on one of the Boulders courses or one of the Troon North courses, they are outstanding venues and unrivalled in Europe.
Moving east from here closer to Scottsdale and Phoenix are the quality bigger resort golf hotels, namely at the Phoenician and the Westin Kierland both managed by Starwood Hotels, both of which have first class 27 hole courses on site. The Phoenician being the ultimate in luxury and in the shadow of Camelback Mountain in a very privileged setting with amazing mountain backdrops and some iconic holes up on the mountain, the hotel is also very close to Old Scottsdale which has some really cool bars, nightclubs and restaurants. The Westin Kierland is also very close to the TPC Scottsdale Golf Course which hosts the Phoenix Open annually, a cracking course maintained immaculately year round. No stay here would be complete without playing 1 round on the Stadium Course.
A slightly cheaper alternative to the Starwood Hotels is the 5 star Fairmont Scottsdale Princess which is located alongside the par 3 second hole of the TPC Scottsdale - a cracking hotel with , lovely gardens and a real relaxed resort environment and close to good nightlife also in the shape of Old Scottsdale. Many rooms have great golf views.
Special mention is also required of the following pure desert course venues which should be on your golfing agenda, the 36 holes at We-Ko-Pa are outstanding where there is tranquility, pure desert and mountain golf with no houses on site. Golf and nature in real harmony, whilst Sunridge Canyon too is first class, these can be reached from the Westin or the Phoenician.
To summarise golfing in Arizona is all about guaranteed dry heat, an amazing and beautiful desert topography with a wide array of exciting indiginous vegetation characterised by the unique Saguaro and Challo cacti, wildlife on most courses includes Iguanas, rattle snakes, wild rabbits, ground squirrels, doves, pigeons, buzzards, sparrow hawks and eagles, quails, cayotes and roadrunners, all hard to find in Europe and living in harmony with the golf courses.
