France has been a major golf holiday destination now since the late 1980s and golf breaks business from the UK exploded, once the Eurotunnel opened in the early to mid 1990s. It recently became the most visited tourist destination in the world, which is some achievement! The country has such a wide and rich array of scenery, cuisine, wines, culture and population, it is hard to pick out the best in one introduction, but as we are only really looking at golf venues this makes it a little easier.
In the Calais region (The Opal Coast)situated so close to Kent, there is a rich belt of great golf courses namely Hardelot, Le Touquet, Belle Dune, St Omer and Arras – ideal for quick short break trips, an opportunity to enjoy fine French wines, cuisine and some great golf. The region known as Pas de Calais is made up of rolling terrain, with lovely little villages in rich meadowland and leading up to some wild beaches and huge sand dunes on the north coast like at Berck or Le Touquet.
The Normandy coastline, where we feature the amazing Hotel Du Golf at Deauville is blessed with fine architecture, Calvados, cider and lovely soft scenery and blessed with stunning coastline and beaches like Aromanches, Etretat and Omaha. The package at the Hotel du Golf allows one to explore and play a fascinating variety of courses – links and parkland. Whilst in Brittany the chic resort seaside town of La Baule is only 10 minutes drive from our golfing resort of the Hotel du Golf Internationale, which has 45 holes of great golf on tap on site.
The Brittany coastline is as good as anywhere in the British Isles and sailors love it because of the rich array of sandy bays and inlets. It has close similarities to Cornwall of course, as Normandy has to Devon.
The Lovely Dordogne is in the south west – just inland from Bordeaux, which can be accessed by flying to Bergerac also and is one of the most picturesque parts of the country, not just super wine like St Emilion but lovely spectacular scenery with gorges, caves, stunning rivers and ancient wine towns to explore and lovely old castles. Our featured resort Chateau des Vigiers is really special and has 27 holes adjacent together with its own wine and vineyards.
The British love the laid back French culture and the superb food – whether it be its soft cheeses or the incomparable baguettes or the more refined frogs legs or snails!! Regardless the French will always create finer cuisine than the British and we are lucky France is just over the English Channel!!
Bon Voyage
